Eventually the Nichicon / Rubycon caps it was endowed with gave up the ghost after 15 years, and simply dried-out. I upgraded it to within an inch of its life dual-core Athlon64 X2, 4 GB RAM (max the MSI-built mobo would handle), discrete Nvidia GPU, SSDs, large external USB hard drives (two), high-power 850W Seasonic PSU (those old Athlons guzzled 'leccy like it was going out of style).etc, etc. Built like a tank, that thing was.came with a single-core Athlon64 and a gig of DDR1.

Up until 2 years ago I'd been struggling along with an ancient, 2005 'original' Compaq Presario PC one of the very last assembled with original Compaq components shortly after the HP buyout in 2004. But if you took it out, for any reason, then the thing would tip over on its back.because the screen XGA display unit had a steel frame, and needed the weight of that massive 19.2 volt battery pack to counterbalance it! Our very first Dell, a 2002-vintage Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop, weighed nearly 7.5 lbs with the battery. Any built during that period were built like the proverbial brick out-house tough, sturdy and made to last. This prevents me from losing (many) changes.I've always liked Dells of that vintage.

I keep a localization list common to all my systems and another for per system localization, and many parts like the yum biz is fedora specific, then I force myself to enter the info into the text file and cut&paste to a shell when I implement a change.

Yum -y install thunderbird screen cups-pdf filelight unrar boostĮcho 1 > /sys/module/snd_ac97_codec/parameters/power_saveĮcho "blacklist pegasus" > /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist The "best by" date on those DVDs is only a week out.įor the local tweaks I keep a 3 pager of 'localization' details mostly in script form likeĮcho "amanita:/home/common /home/common nfs noauto, user, exec, defaults 0 0" >/etc/fstabĪdduser -u 520 -g 520 -G 599 -c stevea steveaĪdduser -u 522 -g 522 -G 599 -c argo argo Yes saving all the custom Fedora specific tweaks is useful, but saving the specific fedora binaries isn't of interest to me - free like beer and it gets stale as fast as an open beer when locked on a DVD. I try not to confuse 'Fedora' with 'my data' - Fedora is only a vehicle for 'my data' and I can change it & reload it or replace it in a few hours from any networkable PC. I'm just looking for something better than backing up a bunch of DVDs and then when you go to use them much of it is stale. The 'bare metal' backup described won't work unless you UNmount /dev/sda \ | grep "not owned" The chances that I would pay $50 for a commercial partition backup tool like acronis range from zero to none. it wouldn't already have the configuration I have now, right?

I was just hoping to save the system configuration, etc.įor example, If I get revisor to work, and have the mysql-server package and apache installed, i suspect i'd need to setup the root password and users again, and configure apache and php also. Saving user data isn't the main objective in this case, because I make backups often enough. I don't want to spend time tweaking this or that setting after I reinstall the system, although it might be easier to make a set of scripts to tweak all those things back.

So, that's why I'm looking at making an iso of my current system. This could be caused by not having a network connection available.

Revisor tells me this: Unable to retrieve software information. I'm still trying to get revisor to work, but I'm also running into the problem where it can't connect to the repositories, although I'm connected to the internet. Yeah, i am looking to be able to restore my computer in the case of a crash.
